There were three main reasons for settlement in Georgia. DEFENSE: Defense was the most important reason for the creation of Georgia. Georgia was created to defend South Carolina from the Spanish, so defense helped Georgia and North Carolina. Because Georgia was known as a 'military buffer,' between South Carolina and La Florida, defense helped alot. ECONOMICS: The economy played a vital role for people wanting to settle in Georgia. Because of Mercantilism, the Trustees hoped that Georgia would be able to produce rice, indigo, wine, and the most important, silk. Silk was so important to Georgia and the Trustees that all of the colonists were required to grow mulberry trees so the silk worms would be able to feed on them. The only product Georgia colonists grew was tobacco, and it wasn't even that important. CHARITY: James Oglethorpe wanted to create a colony for debtors and poor people, but Oglethorpe's dream never came true. The settlers who decided to settle in Georgia were many craftsman who didn't have any experience in North America, and were looking for a new start. Many of the new colonists were given 50 acres of land, a whole year supply of food, and free agricultural and seed supplies.
