Headright System: Land taken from the Indians and given to settlers through the Headright System. Under this system, the head of the family is given 200 acres, and 50 acres goes to each family member for a max of 1000 acres. This system basically gave thousands of acres of land to soldiers who had fought during the Revolution. This system ended when there were too many claimants and not enough land to offer.
Land Lotteries: The land lottery was caused by the Yazoo Territory. Without this territory, Georgia couldn't away as much free land as it did under the Headright System. So, in 1803, Georgia came up with a new way to distribute land by lottery. Land which was won in the lottery was from 50 acres all the way to 500 acres. All free white men had one chance, and veterans or widows had two chances to enter. If you won, everyone would call you a 'fortunate drawer.' Georgia had 7 main lotteries, but this caused conflict between the creek and Cherokee Indians.
Yazoo Land Fraud: The Yazoo Land Fraud was caused when everyone thought they would gain land, which resulted in mass amounts of corruption. Many land spectators wanted to buy Georgia's vast western territory along the Mississippi and Yazoo Rivers, or the Yazoo Territory. As Georgia got bigger and bigger, some leaders of the state began to look for ways to attract settlers to the state, since the growth of the state depended on the growth of the population. After citizens found out, they were mad! Copies of the Yazoo Act were burned at Louisville. Because of the lawsuits from buyers, Georgia gave the Yazoo Territory to the United States Government in 1802. An interesting fact is the Yazoo Territory is now known as Alabama and Mississippi.
