The Stamp Act was passed by the British Parliament on March 22, 1765. The Stamp Act required every American to pay a tax on every piece of paper they used. Ship's papers, legal documents, licenses, newspapers, and even playing cards had a tax. The British Parliament imposed this law because they needed to raise money and help pay for the costs of protecting the American Frontier near the Appalachian Mountains.
